GOOD LUCK TO MY FELLOW STUDENTS

Hello there strangers!

You may have noticed that I have been MIA for pretty much all of 2018 so far. That is because I went back to school to tackle some math and science courses (not my area of expertise) in preparation for the education program in the fall  and it has been kicking me in the butt!

We are now in the last week of classes and exam season is in full swing. I wanted to take a moment to say good luck to all of my fellow students who are sharing my pain right now. Those who are sitting in their sweats, hair in a messy bun with an extra large coffee on hand. It is almost over, and we can do it – I believe us!!!!

Let me know below if you are a student like myself and what challenges you’ve been facing this semester!

* Keep an eye out near the end of the month for new content. Once exams are out of the way I plan to blog weekly.

REFLECTING ON 2017

It is difficult to fully reflect on the year and what you want to do in the new year right in time for January 1st. No one is ever in the full mind space for that! We are still on holiday high and exhausted from all of our fabulous festivities, and now we have to jump back to school or work, putting our minds all over the place.

Now that January is almost over, and I have a clearer view of what 2018 is going to be like, I want to reflect on 2017 and what changes I want to make for the 2018 year.

As the new year was approaching, I was reading posts everywhere about how awful 2017 was. Now, as you know, complaining and being negative isn’t what this blog is all about, but what I can say is there is definitely room for improvement in 2018.

For myself, 2017 was a year of ups and downs that led me to make some pretty big life choices. It was also a year where I discovered I have not been living the life I want to live or being the person I want to be. With this in mind, 2018 is going to be a journey year, the year for me to find out who I am.

I could easily give you a list of all of my resolutions and plans for a better 2018, but at the end of the day, a better 2018 is going to be simply living my best self each day and taking the experiences thrown at me for what they are – learning opportunities.

What are you most looking forward to this year? Let me know!

HOW TO MANAGE STRESS & ANXIETY

Below are the techniques I follow day-to-day to help maintain my anxiety. We all face some form of stress and anxiety throughout our lives. Whether you are someone who deals with anxiety daily or simply are going through a stressful time, I hope these tips will help you.

BREATHE

It may sound simple but trust me, taking the time to breathe during a stressful situation and/or anxiety attack makes all the difference. When I find myself heading towards panic I do my best to stop, take a deep break, and count. I count as high as I need to, and breathe as long as it takes to calm myself.

ORGANIZE

One of the things that is known to cause the most stress in my life is mess and disorganization. Over the past few months, I have worked to organize my apartment and my life in such a way that it relieves stress day to day. Finding a system that allows you to stay organized and on track is key to a (relatively) stress-free life.

READ AND WRITE

Over the past few months, I have set aside more time in my life for both reading and writing. The calm that takes over my mind and body after reading or writing is amazing. I feel so relaxed and accomplished, therefore diminishing stress and anxiety.

CANDLES

We can all agree, a lit scented candle sets the mood for true relaxation. A favourite of mine is Relax from Bath and Body Works.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THOSE YOU LOVE

Friends, family, pets, even your household items. Set up a place of living that you love and enjoy to be in. Plaster your walls with photos and art that make your space feel comfortable and relaxing. Dedicate as much of your time as possible to your friends and family doing the things you love – for me that includes dinner, movies, game nights and shopping!

TREAT YO SELF

It is important to be cautious with money and budget and blah blah – but from time to time we need to treat ourselves. A little retail therapy from time to time is bound to perk anyone up.

SPEND MORE TIME ALONE

As a society, we have become more social and rarely spend time alone. Even if we aren’t in the physical presence of someone else, we are connected to them through social media. Recently I have set aside time each day for me. I have set aside time dedicated to myself to read, take a bubble bath, go to the gym – something that gives me time to myself to think. I have discovered new things about myself during this time and it has allowed me to be more independent and in turn happier.

Post in the comment section below and let me know what steps you take to manage stress and anxiety. Let’s stay connected and work together to make our lives as stress-free as possible.

Please keep in mind that if you are ever feeling overwhelmed and need someone to talk to, I would be happy to help. Email me at stylebyshae@gmail.com!

25 REASONS WHY FALL IS BETTER THAN SUMMER

We are finally experiencing fall here in Halifax and it is one of the most wonderful times of the year. Many of you darlings are sad to see summer come to an end, so to cheer you up I decided to remind you of the many reasons why you should be excited to see summer change to fall.

1. CRISP AIR

All of you summer lovers will hate me for saying this but I am just not a fan of the heat. I love the fresh, crisp and cool air that fall brings.

2. CHANGING LEAVES

Summer flowers are beautiful but they’ve got nothing on the colours of fall leaves.

3. CRUNCH OF THE LEAVES

The only thing better than the colour of the leaves in the fall is their crunch – why is it so satisfying?

4. SCENIC DRIVES

The changing colour of the leaves makes for the most beautiful and scenic drives.

5. CUTE DATES

Let’s face it, fall is the season with the cutest dates. Apple picking, corn mazes, pumpkin patches – all the adorable and Instagram-worthy dates.

6. NON-SWEATY CUDDLES

Gotta love cuddles with your sweetie or your fur babies, but in the summer it is often too hot. The cool air of fall allows for non-sweaty cuddles and it is wonderful.

7. NO BOOB SWEAT

I can see all of your faces right now and hear you saying ew – but don’t deny it – if you have boobs you have boob sweat and it is not fun.

8. FALL DECOR

The colours of fall truly make it one of the best seasons to decorate for – a close second behind Christmas of course.

9. COMFY BLANKETS

Naps are simply not the same without a comfy blanket.

10. SCARVES

Scarves, or hugs that you wear?

11. SWEATERS

Ladies, we all patiently await fall to bring out our favourite knit sweaters.

12. PLAID/FLANNEL

Another fall staple – for everyone.

13. LEGGINGS AND SOCKS

Nothing is comfier than lounging around in leggings and big comfy socks.

14. BOOTIES

My favourite footwear option.  I am not overly tall, so a cute bootie gives me a little height and also looks adorable.

15. FALL FASHION IN GENERAL

I mean come on – every little bit of fall fashion is wonderful.

16. HALLOWEEN

You know, I have never really been a huge fan of Halloween but this year I am actually getting into it!

17. THANKSGIVING

Two words: turkey dinner.

18. WEAR MAKE-UP WITHOUT IT SWEATING OFF

One of the best parts of summer is that summer glow and not having to wear makeup all the time, but sometimes you actually want to wear it. When it’s hot and sweaty, your masterpiece just melts right off your face.

19. DARK LIPS

My favourite fall essential – a gorgeous dark lip.

20. COMFORT FOOD

Fall is the time to enjoy delicious and warm foods like soup, chili, grilled cheese, and anything you can make in a slow cooker.

21. PUMPKIN SPICE … ALMOST ANYTHING

I am a huge fan of PSL, and most baked goods with pumpkin spice are pretty delicious. Over the past few years things have gotten a little out of control with the pumpkin spice – but if we stick to the basics it is one of the best treats of fall.

22. SALTED CARAMEL

Salted caramel mocha, salted caramel cookies, salted caramel brownies, or salted caramel cheesecake.  My mouth is actually watering right now!

23. HOT CHOCOLATE

While hot chocolate does tend to be more of a winter beverage – it is also a fall favourite.

24. ALL OTHER HOT BEVERAGES

Any coffee beverage, lattes, tea – they are all most enjoyable.

25. NEW BEGINNINGS

Fall is often a time of new beginnings, whether you are starting school or a new job or simply looking to make some lifestyle changes, fall often tends to be the setting for these new beginnings.

What are your favourite parts of fall? Let me know below!

HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO

Well, anyone who knows me knows that I have an obsession with cupcakes. I love everything about them. I mean they are adorable mini cakes, how could you not love them? I love baking cupcakes. I love decorating cupcakes. And of course, I love EATING cupcakes. I mean, I love cupcakes so much I named my kitty after them. Now, I may seem a little crazy here, but don’t lie – you love cupcakes too.

The problem cake in any form is that cake is not healthy. A cake has sugar, fat, carbs, and all that unhealthy stuff.  That means we shouldn’t eat cupcakes right? If we eat cupcakes they will make us fat. Instead of cupcakes, we should eat celery sticks and carrots all the time, right? Wrong!

Life is too damn short to not enjoy it and let’s face it, no one has ever eaten a cupcake or a big slice of birthday cake without getting a huge smile on their face. So if you ask me, we should all have our cake and eat it too!

What is your guilty pleasure treat? Let me know below!

HOW TO BE A SUCCESSFUL ADULT

Let’s face it, “adulting” is not easy. As adults, we have bills, responsibilities and the constant pressure to be successful.  The problem with determining whether or not we are successful adults is that there are multiple definitions floating around of what success means. Most of these definitions involve things like careers, money, marriage, kids, houses, etc. Now, are these all parts of life that are a success? Of course! These are definitely parts of life to be proud of, but let’s take a minute to appreciate that they are not the only way to become a successful adult.

Follow this step-by-step guide to becoming a successful adult.

Are you living and breathing?

If this answer to this is yes, then you are currently a successful adult. It may not seem like a big accomplishment to you, but the truth is that it is.

Are you living each day to the fullest?

Now, this doesn’t mean that you are necessarily going on adventures every day. Some days living to the fullest is getting up, going to work, coming home and watching Netflix. Other days it is a day trip somewhere you have ever been. The point is to live each day to fullest that you can that day regardless of what it entails.

Are you happy?

Again, you don’t have to jump for joy every minute of every day. The idea is to be as happy as you can, as often as you can.

Are you able to embrace the bad days?

You are going to have bad days, that is life and there is no way to avoid it. What makes you successful is realizing that bad days are a part of life and moving on from them.

Have you learned from your mistakes?

As we are growing up and figuring out our lives, we are going to make mistakes. To be honest, we have to make mistakes or else how will we learn and grow?

Are you still making mistakes?

Good, this means you are still growing and learning – the idea is to not continue to make the same mistakes over and over.

Well, there you go, I bet you feel a lot better about yourself don’t ya?

EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON

We are all familiar with the phrase  “everything happens for a reason” and we all have a different opinion of what it means. Some people believe in this statement fully and live their life by it, while others think that it is an excuse people use. Some people believe that everything doesn’t happen for a reason but rather things happen because of the choices people make.

I believe these are both valid conclusions. Everything truly does happen for a reason, whether that reason is clear at the time or not. And yes, sometimes that reason is based on the decisions and choices that we make.

If something goes wrong in our lives it isn’t okay to just say that everything happens for a reason and leave it at that. What we need to do is realize that everything does happen for a reason and work on discovering what that reason is. We need to work with life throws at us to make our own fate and make our own magic!

Let me know in the comments below what you think and how you choose to face the obstacles life throws your way.

FLOWER POWER FOR ALLERGY GIRLS

Anyone how knows me knows how bad my seasonal allergies are. In the summer it is not uncommon for me to me sneezing, blowing my nose and have very red and itchy eyes. This is because I have seasonal allergies that make me allergic to almost everything outside this time of year. The worst part of these allergies is the reaction I get to flowers.

I absolutely love flowers, I mean who doesn’t? They are so beautiful and bright and make any room look fresh and clean. Plus who doesn’t love getting flowers from their significant other?! I get chocolate now instead (yum) but miss out on the excitement of receiving flowers, giving them a big sniff and then setting them up for my guests to enjoy.

So, in order to have beautiful flowers in my life, I am incorporating floral print wherever I can. I purchase floral print tops, dresses, blankets – whatever I can find that is a floral print!

As I am writing this post I know it may seem like a silly topic but I know I am not the only girl out there who love flowers but has an unfortunate allergy to them!

How do you lovelies incorporate flowers into your life?
